Warner Music Canada has entered in to an exclusive distribution agreement with Latent Recordings, home to the Cowboy Junkies, Lee Harvey Osmond, Jerry Leger and the Skydiggers amongst others.
As part of the agreement, Warner will assume distribution of past Latent recordings as well as upcoming releases from the label.
The first new release will be Lee Harvey Osmond’s Beautiful Scars on April 7.
“We are really excited about the opportunity that Warner is offering to Latent and its artists,” says Latent Recordings owner Michael Timmons. “We feel that we have found a partner that will help us navigate through this tricky time in the music industry.”
Warner Music Canada president Steve Kane said “I’m very excited that Warner Music Canada is able to build a partnership with Latent Recordings. I’ve been a longtime fan of the records they’ve made and the artists they worked with over the years. Latent Recordings have played an important part in the Canadian music scene and I look forward to being part of their next chapter.”
Latent Recordings was launched in 1982 by Cowboy Junkies (pictured) founding members Michael Timmins and Alan Anton. In the late 1980s the newly formed Junkies used Latent to release their first two albums which included the acclaimed The Trinity Session.
Throughout the early 1990’s Latent released albums by local Toronto acts John Bottomley, the Corndogs and Pat Temple. Since 1999 Latent has been the primary label for all Cowboy Junkies releases and has also recently released albums by The Skydiggers, Ivy Mairi, Jerry Leger, The Good Family and Lee Harvey Osmond. In 2009 Latent launched latentrecordings.com a full service downloading website and the focal point for the labels future endeavours. In 2013 Latent opened up The Hangar, a professional recording studio in the Roncesvalles area of Toronto.
“It’s funny,” added Kane. “I remember back in the mid 1980’s when Michael would drop off copies of the Cowboy Junkies’ first album Whites Off Earth Now! and then later The Trinity Sessions to sell on consignment in the record store that I worked in …so things have kind of come full circle.”
