French CMO Sacem has pledged to build an online platform that aims to better track online music usage and return more revenue to rights-owners – via a 10-year partnership with global tech firm IBM.
Named URights, the platform will be built on IBM Cloud and available for use to other CMOs and partners worldwide.
Sacem wants to better track the use of audiovisual content hosted on services like YouTube in particular.
URights is also set to provide data analytic tools and customised services for local markets.
The National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) recently negotiated a multi-million dollar agreement with YouTube to distribute royalties for musical works used where ownership was previously unknown – a problem Sacem is now no doubt hoping to help solve.
Last year, the CMO tracked nearly 982.5 billion download and streaming transactions – almost twice the 2015 total.
Jean-Noël Tronc (pictured), CEO of Sacem, said: “Sacem is thrilled to partner with IBM, a global technology leader. We work constantly to improve our effectiveness and build on our leading position.
“We are pioneers in a rapidly evolving global marketplace, committed to maximising the value of our members’ rights in a fragmented online world – not just for music rights but also for audio-visual works.
“We are passionate about ensuring a sustainable creative future by using the latest technology to enhance efficiency in identifying the usage of our members’ works – in any digital media, on any web platform.
“URights will enable us to better optimise collections and distributions to our members and for all the repertoires we are mandated to protect, in the most transparent way.”
