All-time Shazam record smashed by Florence + The Machine track in Game Of Thrones

The all-time record for the most number of Shazams in 24 hours has been shattered.

Florence + The Machine’s performance of Jenny of Oldstones appeared over the end credits in the latest episode of HBO’s Game Of Thrones, which aired Sunday (April 21).

The episode, the second of the show’s eighth and final season, was entitled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

It saw character Podrick sing Jenny of Oldstones to Brienne, Tyrion, Davos and Tormund during a drinking session ahead of their battle against the White Walkers.

Florence Welch’s vocal interpretation then appeared over the show’s end credits.

Shazam has confirmed to MBW that Welch’s track was ‘Shazamed’ approximately 300,000 times worldwide during a 24 hour period following its appearance in the show.

That was enough to beat the previous all-time record, set by Adele‘s Hello in October 2015, which attracted 200,000 ‘Shazams’ in its opening 24 hours.

An important distinction between those two record-breakers: Hello was Shazamed by its audience after appearing as a huge new single on the radio, music streaming services etc., but Jenny of Oldstones was just a TV sync, with little if no other media support.

Florence + The Machine, if you were wondering, are signed to Virgin EMI / Universal Music for records and Universal Music Publishing Group for publishing.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reportedly attracted 10.29 million viewers on its initial live broadcast on HBO. That number grew to 15.9 million on day one when streaming and replays were factored in.

Viewers in the US can Shazam the new Game Of Thrones episodes to access specific GoT content on Apple Music, TV, Books and Podcasts. These goodies include soundtracks from the show and Game of Thrones-inspired playlists on Apple Music, plus all of the past episodes to watch on Apple TV app, exclusive enhanced books and audiobooks on Apple Books, and commentary from GoT-themed podcasters on Apple Podcasts.

An official lyric video for Florence + The Machine’s Jenny Of Oldstones, meanwhile, has already racked up more than 6 million plays on YouTube.

Shazam was acquired by Apple in September last year for a reported $400m, after which Apple wasted no time in scrapping advertising on the app.

Shazam continues to push users to a variety of streaming music services including, unsurprisingly, Apple Music.Music Business Worldwide
