Within Luminate‘s annual year-end report, the data and analysis company reveals the market share of ‘catalog’ vs. ‘current’ music across the total consumption of tracks and albums in the States.
Within this formula, ‘catalog’ refers to music that is 18 months old (or older), while ‘current’ means the opposite – music that has been released in the 18 months prior to play/purchase.
The figure Luminate’s report is based on a ‘total consumption’ formula that takes into account both streams, digital purchases, and physical (album) purchases.
The years from 2022 below onwards are from Luminate annual reports; years previous to this refer to annual reports from Nielsen Music or MRC.
