Leonard Cohen, one of the most influential singer/songwriters of all time, has died aged 82.
Cohen’s record label, Sony Music, confirmed his death on the artist’s Facebook page.
“It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away,” the company said in a statement.
“We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date.
“The family requests privacy during their time of grief.”
Cohen released his latest studio album, You Want It Darker, last month. The LP was produced by his son, Adam Cohen.
The Montreal-born singer’s hits during a 50 year career included Suzanne, Hallelujah and I’m Your Man.
A cause of death was not given.
Tributes have begun pouring in from artists and music business figures alike.
“Leonard Cohen was a legend among legends,” said Eric Baptiste, CEO of Canadian collection society SOCAN.
“With iconic songs that defined an entire era, he inspired many generations all over the world. SOCAN was honoured to count him among our most prominent members.
