Lorna Clarke has been appointed as the first Controller of Pop Music at British broadcaster and media giant, the BBC.
As Controller of Pop Music, Clarke will be responsible for BBC pop radio stations Radio 1, Radio 1Xtra, Radio 2, Radio 6 Music, Asian Network, as well as other music output.
Clarke has almost 30 years broadcasting experience, joining Kiss 100 FM in 1990 as London Programme Director.
According to a statement published by the BBC today (July 9) Clarke will “have a strategic vision across the portfolio, including BBC Music and music television”
It adds that she will “work with the music industry, fostering the BBC’s crucial role in developing new talent”.
Clarke’s appointment obviously ends speculation that the current Controller of BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, Ben Cooper, would be upped to the new role, a suggestion put forward by music business whisperers after the news of the organizational shakeup first emerged in April.
In addition to Clarke’s appointment, Jonathan Wall has been appointed as the first Controller of BBC Sounds while Mohit Bakaya has been named as the next Controller of Radio 4.
Clarke will start in September, while Wall and Mohit Bakaya will take on their new roles in August.
