Boomplay has inked another licensing deal – and has added 2m users in the past month.
The streaming and download music service that covers multiple regions in Africa has signed a deal with Merlin, the global digital rights agency for independent labels.
Merlin’s membership includes more than 20,000 record labels and distributors from 6o countries (commanding in excess of 12% of the digital music market).
Boomplay, available in the likes of Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia offers a catalog of over 10m songs and videos.
The deal with Merlin follows Boomplay’s licensing deal signed with Sony Music Entertainment last month, at which time the service revealed that it had 60m users.
The platform now has over 62 million users according to the press release announcing the partnership.
Today’s news also follows licensing deals with Universal Music Group (announced in November 2018) and Warner Music Group (March 2019).
Boomplay is jointly owned by two large-scale Chinese companies, Transsion Holdings NetEase as part of their Transsnet Music Limited JV.
