In today’s email, signed off by Midem Director Alexandre Deniot, Midem’s organizers note that “due to the lasting pandemic and following a review of its activity, RX France has decided to no longer organize the Midem events”.
Deniot adds: “It is with regret therefore that we are cancelling the Midem 2022 edition, scheduled in Cannes from June 7 to 10 2022.”
There may yet be a lifeline for Midem, though MBW’s senior industry sources are not particularly hopeful: RX France says it is “in exclusive and advanced discussions” with the City of Cannes for the latter entity to potentially “take over the Midem brand”.
Midem has been hosted in the city of Cannes, France annually since 1967.
The most recent, and now final, physical incarnation of the event took place back in 2019, with an attendance of 5,000 artists, execs and other visitors.
As reported yesterday, Midem’s attendance figure in 2019 was up on 2018 (4,800) and 2017 (4,400), but significantly down on previous years. A delegation of 10,000 visitors attended in 2001, for example.
Midem went entirely digital due to COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 and 2021.
Midem previously announced that the music industry expo would be returning for an in-person event in June 2022.
Organizers promised that the 2022 edition would have come complete with “vibrant meetings, access to killer keynotes, unique gigs on the Midem beach and endless discoveries of new contacts, artists and services, leading to lifelong business relationships”.
Midem’s website has now also been updated with a message announcing the axing of the event.
