US-based music publishing administrator Regard Music has joined IMPEL for pan-European licensing of its represented works.
Regard Music is a publishing services company founded by Sean O’Malley.
O’Malley, an executive with more than 20 years of experience in music publishing and operations, including licensing, royalty collection and distribution, data processing and systems development, is a former COO of Global Music Rights.
Before that, he worked at ASCAP for eight years and supervised a multi-coast team to resolve collection issues on behalf of its members.
Regard’s client list includes songwriters and composers, including Robin Thicke, four-time Grammy winner Lyle Lovett, New Orleans pianists James Booker and Professor Longhair, singer-songwriter Kat Edmonson, South London singer and producer Kay Young and online meditation company Headspace.
IMPEL is the international collective licensing agency representing digital music publishing rights.
It is 100% owned and controlled by its members, which include respected independent publishers such as Bucks Music Group, Beggars Music, Reservoir Music, Kassner Music CTM, ABKCO, Truelove Music, Faber Music and Mute Song.
The IMPEL membership represents a collection of works recorded by artists including Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Dua Lipa, David Bowie, Ray Charles, Rihanna, Beyonce, Calvin Harris and Elvis Presley.
In 2021, new IMPEL members included Los Angeles-based Levantine Music, the Portugual-based music publisher Lusitanian Music Publishing, and the royalty-free music and content platform Artlist, who grabbed headlines in 2020 when financing giant KKR invested $48 million into it.
“IMPEL is the right fit for Regard and its clients.”
Sean O’Malley, Regard Music
Sean O’Malley, Regard Music CEO, said: “IMPEL is the right fit for Regard and its clients because of their expertise and independence in the European marketplace.
“Working together, we can achieve our collective goals of clearer reporting and better returns for our writer and publisher clients without the restraints of politics and daily inertia plaguing the larger industry.”
“There is a synergy in our respective philosophies that speaks to a willingness to break the mould and to innovate.”
Sarah Williams, IMPEL
Sarah Williams, IMPEL CEO, added: “I believe that Sean’s decision to partner with IMPEL at this stage of Regard’s evolution is an important step for both organisations.
“There is a synergy in our respective philosophies that speaks to a willingness to break the mould and to innovate.
“We also have a great deal to offer each other in terms of knowledge and expertise and I think that, together, we can push the boundaries for independent music publishing. This is an exciting time.”Music Business Worldwide
