SoundCloud‘s artist services and distribution platform Repost by SoundCloud has entered into a new partnership with Cosynd, a New York-based legal service that automates copyright contracts and registrations.
The partnership will provide artists using Repost with user discounts to Cosynd’s suite of services to help register their copyrights, establish ownership, and create agreements to help protect their work.
In March of 2019, the U.S Supreme Court ruled that creators must register their copyrights and obtain a decision regarding their application with the U.S Copyright Office as a prerequisite before filing an infringement lawsuit.
Typically, completing the registration process could take several months and can be nearly 20x more expensive if creators wait until a legal issue arises to attempt a rushed filing, according to Cosynd.
By partnering with Cosynd, Repost by SoundCloud community members will be able to register all of their content (music, videos, images, literature) at a discounted rate.
Repost by SoundCloud artists will be able to register copyrights for $25 (plus federal filing fees) through this partnership. Traditional services may charge upwards of $150 per registration.
Repost by SoundCloud artists will also benefit from Cosynd’s digital platform where they can create, negotiate, and sign customized copyright agreements with collaborators to create work for hire agreements, producer agreements, or premium split sheets.
