US-headquartered music company Reservoir has acquired a raft of songs from country songwriter Stephony Smith for an undisclosed fee.
The deal includes the #1 and multi-platinum single It’s Your Love by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.
Smith began her career writing commercial jingles in Memphis, Tennessee.
By 1989, Smith moved to Nashville and signed her first publishing deal with PolyGram, now Universal.
She has since written songs for artists including Shania Twain, Barbara Streisand, Kenny Chesney, Montgomery Gentry, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, and Wynonna Judd.
She also collaborated with The Chicks to pen Sin Wagon, which sold 11 million albums and is among the songs Reservoir acquired.
It’s Your Love by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill held the #1 spot on the country chart for six weeks upon its release.
Smith has written four additional #1 singles, including How Was I To Know by Reba McEntire, Perfect Love by Trisha Yearwood, Yes by Chad Brock, and Back When by Tim McGraw.
She was also awarded the titles of BMI Country Song and Songwriter of the Year for It’s Your Love, and garnered a BMI Pop Award in 1998.
Smith also co-wrote Johnny and June by Heidi Newfield, formerly of Trick Pony, which was nominated for The Academy of Country Music’s Song of the Year.
In partnering with Reservoir, Smith joins a raft of new catalog acquisitions and publishing deals struck by the company, which includes Joni Mitchell, Rufio Hooks, and rock producer Tom Werman.
