Last month MBW revealed that SoundCloud has over 250 million tracks on its platform and that as of November 2020, 12 million creators (including musicians, DJs, podcasters etc.) are heard on SoundCloud every month.
Now we’ve found out which of those artists were the most popular on the platform this year, based on its community’s reactions.
SoundCloud has published its “2020 Playback”, a year-in-review where the company highlights “the artists, tracks and moments that mattered most in 2020”.
The late rapper Pop Smoke has been named as SoundCloud’s Top Artist in 2020, with his music streamed over 191.5 million times this year.
“We celebrate the life and work of Pop Smoke as our Top Artist,” states SoundCloud. “The rising Brooklyn drill star was beloved by the SoundCloud community and they continue to show it.”
Meanwhile, SoundCloud’s Top Track was Lil Mosey’s double-platinum, Top 10 US single Blueberry Faygo, which garnered over 54m streams and over 760,000 likes this year.
Lil Mosey uploaded his first track to the platform when he was 14 years old in 2016 and quickly gained over 50K streams.
The Top Remix was NLE Choppa Different Day (Lil Baby – Emotionally Scarred Remix), which was streamed on SoundCloud over 7.9m times.
The title of Longest Reign went to Still With You by JK of BTS. Released on June 5, the track stayed in the No.1 spot on SoundCloud’s New & Hot Chart for two straight weeks.
The track has also been named by SoundCloud as this year’s “Buzziest Drop” after received the most engagement from listeners in a single day.
BTS fans broke the platform’s records for “most comments” and “most likes” within 24 hours, with 121,981 comments and 512,864 likes, respectively.
SoundCloud’s Top DJ Set was RL Grime “Halloween IX”. Uploaded on October 30, it has been reposted over 5,600 times and was streamed over 546,000 times in less than one month.
Elsewhere, SoundCloud reports to have seen a 50% increase in uploads from March to April, and creators have so far uploaded 524,734 tracks with titles or tags related to the pandemic.
Additionally, SoundCloud reports that tracks with titles or tags related to the Black Lives Matter movement were streamed over 53.5m times this year.
