[Update: Musixmatch have directed us to their statement, which reads: “From Friday, May 27th, Musixmatch is no longer available within Spotify desktop. It was a great partnership and there is mutual respect between both companies as our business strategies move us each in different directions. We regret the end of this partnership… we will not allow anybody to ignore our business model.”]
Spotify’s karaoke-style lyrics feature disappeared over the weekend just over a year after launching thanks to an integration with Musixmatch.
Musixmatch allowed Spotify’s desktop users to read the lyrics of the songs they play with a button located next to the play bar.
It was designed to give listeners an area to help them to “start singing along”. Lyrics could also be searched and browsed using the platform’s Explore feature.
However, those features have been removed over the last few days and Twitter is awash with confused fans asking for it back.
The Lyrics button is still there, as is the search bar, but both yield no results.
“I can confirm our lyrics feature is currently unavailable as we’re making some big improvements to the feature. We’ll share more updates soon.”
spotify spokesperson
A Spotify spokesperson confirmed the disappearance is due to an upcoming update, telling MBW: “I can confirm our lyrics feature is currently unavailable as we’re making some big improvements to the feature. We’ll share more updates soon.”
Users can still link Spotify to the third party Musixmatch app, but it’s no longer accessible inside the streaming service.
