‘There’s a dance music revolution taking place in Asia’: Spinnin’ Records expands into region

Dance and electronic music powerhouse Spinnin’ Records has launched Spinnin’ Records Asia, based in Singapore.

Spinnin’ plans to use the expansion both to build local success, and to help “sign and work with artists of Asian heritage from every part of the world, bringing their music to a global audience”.

The move comes just over two years after Spinnin’, whose YouTube channel now has over 26m subscribers, was acquired in a nine-figure deal by Warner Music Group.

In addition to working with Warner in Asia to sign artists, Spinnin’ says that established artists from both its own and WMG’s rosters will now team up with Spinnin’ Records Asia on collabs “with some of Asia’s upcoming stars”.

Spinnin’s move into Asia therefore suggests that Warner is keen to pose a challenge to Liquid State – Sony’s dance-focused JV label with Tencent Music Entertainment (TME), which is based in Hong Kong and recently saw signing CORSAK top a billion streams with hit single Reverse.

“This is a region that’s already delivered groundbreaking artists, and is currently reshaping the dance and pop music environment with a burst of exciting new acts.”

Spinnin’, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, continues to be run autonomously by CEO Roger de Graaf and his team.

“We’re very excited about the launch of Spinnin’ Records Asia”, said de Graaf. “This is a region that’s already delivered groundbreaking artists, and is currently reshaping the dance and pop music environment with a burst of exciting new acts.

“We’re proud and eager to start working with them, as they’ll surely help take the Spinnin’ brand to the next level.”

“There’s a dance music revolution taking place in Asia… The launch of Spinnin’ Records Asia will help ensure that we’re the first choice for these artists.”

Simon Robson, Warner Music Group

Simon Robson, President, Warner Music Asia, said: “There’s a dance music revolution taking place in Asia. We’re seeing a new generation of DJs and producers coming through who are inspiring fans and building scenes that rivals those in Europe and America.

“The launch of Spinnin’ Records Asia will help ensure that we’re the first choice for these artists as they seek to build their careers at home and around the world.”

The debut single on Spinnin’ Records Asia, Feel The Light, is scheduled for release next Friday, November 29.

The track comes from US-based DJ duo BEAUZ, who have Indonesian and Taiwanese heritage.

“We are truly excited to be a part of this launch,” said the pair.

“Spinnin’ Records Asia opens the curtain to a new era of globalized music and we can’t wait to show the world what we got.”Music Business Worldwide
