African music service Mdundo has inked a new telco partnership with MTN Nigeria, which has a customer base of over 70 million subscribers in the country.
Mdundo, which listed on the Danish stock exchange (the Nasdaq First North Growth Market) in September 2020, has also revealed that it had 8.7m monthly active users as of June 2021, up 1.7m from February 2021.
MTN is active in 16 African markets with more than 200 million mobile subscribers across Africa.
Together, MTN and Mdundo will launch a music bundle available to MTN’s subscribers which offers access to Mdundo’s premium service as well as exclusively curated music mixes to subscribing customers.
Mdundo says that it introduced telco partnerships as a central part of its monetization initiatives in 2020 and expects this income stream to account for 40% of the company’s revenue “within a few years”.
The agreement with MTN Nigeria follows a partnership signed in May with Vodacom Tanzania.
As a result of these partnerships, the Mdundo music bundles are now available to a total of 125m mobile customers within Nigeria and Tanzania.
Mdundo says that it works directly with 100,000 African artists and offers a catalog of over 2m African and international songs.
