Apple Music cuts free trial for new subscribers from three months to one

Apple Music has reduced its three month trial period for new subscribers, from three months, to one month.

The move brings the duration of Apple‘s free trial in line with rivals like Spotify which also only offers one month free as standard for new subscribers.

As reported by MacRumours, Apple has offered a three month free trial for new users since the service launched in 2015, with the shorter one-month trial now offered ‘in the United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Japan, and other countries’.

The move comes less than a year after Apple Music announced that it was bundling both Lossless Audio and Spatial Audio with support for Dolby Atmos, free of charge, with its $9.99-per-month streaming subscription.

The two HD formats were officially rolled out in June 2021.

As reported by 9to5 Mac, Apple will still be offering extended free trials, of six months, to new customers who purchase one of its eligible audio products, including Beats products, AirPods Max, AirPods, AirPods Pro and Homepod mini.

According to Apple, “you have 90 days after first pairing your device to take advantage of your six free months of Apple Music” and “for current owners of eligible devices, you have 90 days after upgrading to the latest iOS or iPadOS to redeem your six months free”.

9to5 Mac suggests that the reduction in Apple Music’s trial period to one month could be an attempt to convert “people switching from Spotify to Apple Music into paying subscribers as quickly as possible”.

It adds that “there is believed to be a least some amount of exodus from Spotify to Apple Music right now, depending on who you talk to”.

Other Apple Music tiers include the Family Plan which allows up to six accounts for $14.99 per month, and the Apple One bundle, starting at $15 per month for access to services like Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and iCloud+.

Additionally, Apple offers a $4.99 per month Apple Music Voice Plan, which offers access to the service’s full catalog of 90 million songs, tens of thousands of playlists, personalized mixes, genre stations; as well as Apple Music Radio.

Apple Music’s premium offerings, including Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio, Lyrics, Music Video are not included in this plan.
