Apple Music has extended its three-month free trial for new users by an extra month.
Some of those who’ve signed up to Apple’s free trial, but have yet to take up a subscription, have received an alert offering an extension of the trial, according to Mac Rumours.
Notifications for the Apple offer nod to its recent improvements under the iOS 10 redesign, which aim to make “finding what you want, and discovering new music, easier than ever.”
The move arrives soon after Spotify announced it had signed new deals with labels for a bulked-up free tier.
Spotify‘s major upgrade to its mobile free tier include more on-demand elements for ad-supported users – including the ability to select individual tracks in up to 15 different playlists such as Discover Weekly, Rap Caviar and Today’s Top Hits.
That’s in addition to data-saving benefits, increased personalization and other perks.
At last count, Apple Music had hit 40 million subscribers worldwide.
That means the streaming service’s average per-month net addition of subscribers in 2018 has been consistently above 2m, which doesn’t include users on a free trial.
It’s a marked improvement on its monthly addition rate in Q4 last year when Apple was adding around 1.2m subs per month.
In February, we learned that Spotify counted 71m paying subscribers at the end of 2017.
According to fiscal guidance handed to its shareholders towards the end of March, the service said that it expected to end Q1 2018 with somewhere between 73m and 76m subs.
