Apple Music is now available in 59 countries that Spotify is not

Last week saw Apple Music launch in two new territories – Turkey and Taiwan.

Spotify is already available in both countries, but that’s not the case for many markets around the world.

Despite only launching in June last year (less than eight months ago) Apple Music is now available in 113 countries, according to MBW research.

Spotify, on the other hand, is available in 59 (plus additional subsidiary regions).

Spotify, which launched back in 2008, has seen its international growth slow since 2013 – a year when a sudden burst of expansion saw it enter the likes of Italy, Poland, Portugal, Mexico, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Estonia, Latvia, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Chile, Cyprus and Czech Republic.

Apple Music, of course, is following in the footsteps of iTunes before it. When the platform arrived on June 30 last year it launched in over 100 countries, later adding the likes of China in addition to this month’s Turkey and Taiwan announcement.

Apple Music, of course, is backed by one of the richest companies on the planet – one which can easily afford the fast-accelerating overheads that come with international growth.

Spotify, on the other hand, needs a cash top up to expand further if it’s decision to raise a further $500m in investment this year is anything to go by.

Below, you can see all the countries in which both Spotify and Apple Music are currently available.

You’ll see that, less than eight months after its launch, Apple Music has already expanded its reach into many areas which Spotify is yet to touch – particularly in Eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine), Asia (Indonesia, Japan, China, India), Africa (Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria) and the Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia).

[Update]: MBW counts 59 countries in which Apple Music is available and Spotify is not, with the reverse applying to just five territories (Andorra, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Monaco, Uruguay).

For clarity, we have bolded every country under Apple Music’s list in which Spotify is yet to launch, and vice versa.

As of last month, Apple Music has 10m paying subscribers around the world, while Spotify is understood to currently boast 28m paying subscribers and just under 100m active users.
