BMG is enjoying some nice success with Gary Numan’s latest album, Savage (Songs From A Broken World).
The LP, released September 15, landed at No.2 on the UK’s Official Chart last week – making it the highest-charting album release from the British pioneer in over 30 years.
It should also, according to BMG, have ended up at No.1 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Album chart in the US.
Savage outsold Calvin Harris’s latest, Funk Wav Bounces Vol.1, in the Stateside chart week by around 600 copies.
Yet it was Harris who claimed the Billboard summit.
Why? Because 59-year-old Gary Numan was not deemed to fit with the Billboard chart stipulations for a Dance/Electronic artist.
And BMG ain’t happy about it.
“This is ludicrous and calls into question the whole credibility of the [Billboard] chart.”

“To be honest, we are a bit bemused,” a spokesperson for the company told MBW. “We’re talking about one of the undisputed pioneers of electronic music being banned from an electronica chart.
“It is ludicrous and calls into question the whole credibility of the chart. Gary has been robbed of a No.1.”
They further warned: “Gary’s fans are ferociously loyal. They’ll be livid.”
BMG just signed The Prodigy for the world, with a new album due for release in 2018.
You now have to wonder how that one will be categorized by the US chart gatekeepers…Music Business Worldwide
