Stones Throw Records is seeking a Junior Designer. The position is full time, based in our L.A. office. This position will create layouts for records and ensure graphic design language is consistent across album campaigns.
It is essential that the Designer has a strong grasp of Stones Throw’s visual and creative legacy, paying careful consideration to how all design output contributes to this legacy and the presentation of our artists.

About Stones Throw
Stones Throw Records is an independent record label founded in 1996 by DJ Peanut Butter Wolf with offices in Los Angeles and London. Known for a richly diverse roster, past touchstone releases include albums by Madvillain, J Dilla, Madlib, Mayer Hawthorne, Dam-Funk, and Aloe Blacc.
The current roster includes artists such as Sudan Archives, Mild High Club, Knxwledge, Mndsgn, Benny Sings, NxWorries (Anderson. Paak & Knxwledge), Automatic, Jerry Paper, John Carroll Kirby, Kiefer and Los Retros.
Responsibilities
- Create and/or lay out artwork for digital and physical products and packaging, either independently or in collaboration with external photographers / artists.
- Work directly with our artists and marketing staff to ensure that all creative elements are designed to a high standard and compliant with technical specifications.
- Oversee delivery and quality control of production files with strong eye for proofing.
- Ensure the visual world of artist and album campaigns is cohesive, by designing web & social media images and banners; retail and digital marketing assets for record stores and DSPs; product shots and mockups; flyers and tour posters; adverts and OOH; and more as needed.
- Help create and design Stones Throw merchandise including apparel, posters, special projects, and one-off items.
- Though the role primarily consists of executing design and photography in-house, some external commissioning may also be required.
- Obtain source/commission for original imagery and help procure permission or licensing.
Requirements
- Design degree or equivalent qualification.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience working in record design and/or production.
- Genuine passion for and knowledge of Stones Throw’s visual aesthetic, history, and music.
- Skills in typography, illustration, graphic design, and photography, as demonstrated in an excellent portfolio.
- Knowledge of production techniques and considerations for vinyl, CD, cassette and other physical products.
- Deep proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud applications (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.).
- Must independently & effectively manage multiple, concurrent projects and deadlines without compromising quality.
- Demonstrable strong communication skills and organizational skills.
- Ability to take creative direction, share new ideas and pay close attention to details.
- Extensive contacts and excellent relationships in fields of art, design and photography.
- Resourceful at working within independent label budgets.
- Positive and collaborative attitude.
Compensation
$50-65k salary (dependent on experience) plus health benefits, 401K matching, PTO, paid holidays (including December 24 to January 1), and other benefits.
