Michael Abitbol has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Head of US Digital, at Sony Music Publishing.
In his new role, Abitbol will manage and oversee all aspects of Sony Music Publishing’s US digital business, as well as a newly expanded US digital team.
His responsibilities will include engaging with digital services, negotiating and drafting digital agreements, implementing digital strategy, and liaising with SMP’s global digital teams.
He is based at the company’s New York office and reports to Antony Bebawi, Sony Music Publishing’s President, Global Digital, since 2020.
Previously, as SVP, Business & Legal Affairs, Digital, a position he has held since 2016, Abitbol negotiated agreements on behalf of Sony Music Publishing’s songwriters and catalogs, helping to achieve higher rates and better long-term financial stability, says the company.
This includes recent deals with Peloton, Soul Cycle and other fitness-related apps, as well as renewal deals with Facebook, TikTok and YouTube.
Abitbol launched his career at the company in 2007, specializing in digital deals at EMI Music Publishing, and in 2012 moved to Sony Music Publishing when it took over administration of the EMI catalog.
Before joining EMI, Abitbol worked as a lawyer at the Davis & Gilbert firm, and previously held roles in artist management.
