The battle for supremacy in the world of free personalised music radio got a serious new player today, as MixRadio confirmed its expansion onto Android and iOS platforms.
MixRadio was formerly owned by Nokia, and as such was restricted to Microsoft’s Windows mobile operating systems.
Since March, however, it has been owned by Japanese mobile messaging company LINE, which dubs MixRadio “the world’s most personal and easy-to-use music streaming service”.
Boasting 181 million users, LINE has clearly been keen to unleash MixRadio onto the world’s most popular mobiles – something it has now achieved.
Despite today’s announcement, the app will continue to be pre-loaded on Microsoft’s Lumia devices globally and offer a full service to Lumia users.
MixRadio is therefore now available on all major mobile operating systems in 31 countries around the world: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, UK, USA and Vietnam.
That means the platform, which boasts “millions of users” – but has never confirmed a specific consumer base tally – is available in 28 more markets that digital personalised radio market leader Pandora, which is only licensed in the US, Australia and New Zealand.
“We’re excited to bring our easy-to-use music service to a huge new audience.”
Jyrki Rosenberg, Mixradio
MixRadio CEO Jyrki Rosenberg commented: “We’re excited to be bringing our personalized and easy-to-use music streaming service to a huge new audience.
“For many people this will be the first time they have been able to experience MixRadio; we’re confident they will love the simplicity of the experience and the quality of the personalisation we deliver.
“We cut out the clutter between the listener and the music they love, helping them enjoy, discover and rediscover great music.
“We are already available in 31 countries and have been developing and improving our personalised music offering over many years, meaning we combine the benefits of having a heritage in the space with the excitement of launching a new product.”
In addition, MixRadio has announced a major new co-marketing partnership with HTC.
MixRadio will exclusively provide music updates for HTC’s BlinkFeed, providing personalized music news tailored to the users’ music tastes.
Phil Blair, President of HTC EMEA from HTC comments: “HTC is a pioneer in providing top quality audio experiences via mobile. We were the first smartphone company to combine dual stereo speakers, a finely tuned sound profile and Dolby decoding technology to deliver an end-to-end multi-channel audio solution, HTC BoomSound.
“The MixRadio partnership is the latest example of HTC investing in delivering rich audio experiences, helping us bring completely personal and relevant music news to our users, so they never miss out on the latest releases and mixes of the music they love.”
MixRadio’s one-touch MyMix feature offers a tailored stream of music that ‘learns’ the music listeners most enjoy.
The platform also hosts curated mixes created by MixRadio’s ‘global team of music experts’, and by international stars.
In total, it boasts a catalogue of over 35 million tracks, plus over 10,000 curated mixes.
Unlike many free music streaming services, MixRadio lets users listen to offline mixes on the move.Music Business Worldwide
