Spotify is testing a lite version of its app – Spotify Lite – to better cater for a wider variety of mobile devices and data plans.
The test is being run in Brazil and follows the launch of slimmed-down apps from Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Uber.
Spotify Lite takes up less space and uses less data but doesn’t include many of the features within its main version, like offline playback, extreme quality playback and Spotify Connect, according to this Ubergizmo report.
It also doesn’t allow premium subscribers to select the songs and playlists they want to hear.
“At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience.
“Some of those tests end up paving the path for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning.”

A Spotify spokesperson told us: “At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience.
“Some of those tests end up paving the path for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning.
“We aren’t going to comment on specific tests at this time.”
This is another territorially restricted test from Spotify after it began experimenting with a higher monthly price in Norway in April.
From May and July, new and existing Spotify premium subscribers in Norway pay 109 NOK ($13/£10) a month — an increase of 10% from the previous 99 NOK price.
The price of family and student plans were similarly affected.
