Travis Scott: Mixtapes and breakthrough
Born Jacques Bermon Webster II, Travis Scott shot to fame after building buzz through the release of a series of mixtapes, starting with 2013’s Owl Pharaoh, which was released on rapper T.I.’s label Grand Hustle and Epic. Scott had also signed a publishing deal with a publishing deal with Kanye West’s GOOD Music, as part of its production wing Very GOOD Beats.
His debut album Rodeo followed in 2015, reaching No.3 on the Billboard 200 Chart.

Scott has written a number of hits for artists including Kanye West, Jay-Z, Big Sean, John Legend, Drake and Madonna. In 2016, he won two BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards for his song Antidote, and for co-writing and co-producing Rihanna’s Bitch Better Have My Money.
The same year, Scott signed a new publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group, as second album Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight hit No.1 in the US and cracked the UK Top 20.
Third album Astroworld was released in 2018 via Scott’s own Cactus Jack Records. The label’s debut mixtape Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho, released in 2017, was a collaboration between Scott and Migos member Quavo. with the duo’s performing name also being Hunco Jack.
Scott was accused of copyright infringement in 2020 on his US No.1 single, Highest in the Room. In the lawsuit, musicians and producers Olivier Bassil, Benjamin Lasnier and Lukas Benjamin Leth claimed that a melody used in the track is a plagiarised version of a guitar melody used on their own song, Cartier.
Travis Scott: brand partnerships
Astroworld tour visuals reappeared in 2020 when Scott performed five virtual live shows in videogame Fortnite, which received more than 27 million viewers. The performances also included the premiere of a new song with Kid Cudi, The Scotts, which was released by the duo performing under the same name and became Scott’s third US No.1.
Also in 2020, Scott collaborated with McDonald’s to launch a limited edition meal, The Travis Scott, the first celebrity-endorsed McDonald’s meal since 1992’s McJordan.
Scott was also named a Strategic Creative Partner at Sony Playstation to promote the PS5 console. At the time, Scott said: “I’m really looking forward to being able to showcase everything that Cactus Jack has worked on with Sony and the PlayStation team.
