UK supermarket giant Tesco has started stocking 20 vinyl albums around the country after a trial run with Iron Maiden’s latest LP became a sell-out success.
The triple-vinyl version of Maiden’s The Book Of Souls was carried by 55 Tesco Extra stores after it was released in September.
The grocer was testing whether it could find a place in the ‘vinyl revival’ that saw 1.3m units of the format purchased in the UK last year – the biggest tally since 1995.
Tesco music buyer Michael Mulligan said: “Our trial selling vinyl this summer was a real success with all our stock selling out and this really proved to us just how popular the vinyl album format is again with music fans.”
As a result, Tesco is now stocking a range that includes new vinyl LPs such as Coldplay’s A Head Full Of Dreams, George Ezra’s Wanted On Voyage and David Gilmour’s Rattle That Lock, as well as seminal albums like Bob Marley’s Greatest Hits, Prince’s Purple Rain (pictured), The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper and The Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers.
“Vinyl is definitely coming back with demand growing stronger year-by-year. We think there will be a big demand in the UK this christmas.”

These LPs arrive in time for festive shopping, and have gone on sale in 40 Tesco stores across the UK, costing between £12 and £20.
“Vinyl is definitely coming back with demand growing stronger year by year and we think there will be a big demand in the UK this Christmas as music fans look for trendy gifting options,” added Michael Mulligan.
“We have brought in vinyl albums for everyone – from new releases for established collectors to absolute classics for younger fans and for mums and dads who might have worn out their original copies the first time round.
“By also selling record decks we are helping customers who are looking to start their own vinyl album collection.”
Tesco also now stocks 12 different models of record player, ranging in price from £40 to £140.
