Topspin co-founder joins Pandora as VP of Product

The co-founder of e-commerce, marketing and D2F platform Topspin, Shamal Ranasinghe, has joined Pandora as VP of Product.

Topspin’s legacy in the music industry will probably be best remembered for its sale to Beats Music in March 2014 – just two months before Beats itself was sold to Apple for $3bn.

Between these deals, the e-commerce side of Topspin Media – and its brand – was sold on by Beats to equity firm Transom Capital Group’s entertainment and merch business BandMerch/Cinder Block.

That means Apple continues to own the ‘ArtistLink’ tech behind Topspin’s well-regarded D2F platform, which now likely forms the basis of the Connect channel in Apple Music.

Meanwhile, the ex-CEO of Topspin, Ian Rogers, is now a vital part of the team building Apple Music.

Ranasinghe set up Topspin in 2007 with Peter Gotcher. He also founded Fluence.

Discussing his move to Pandora in a blog post, Ranasinghe said:
